Leeds United are reportedly just two steps away from completing their fifth signing of the summer transfer window, having agreed a deal in principle with Eintracht Frankfurt for experienced goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.
With the summer window hurtling toward its dramatic final deadline, manager Daniel Farke is working feverishly to put the finishing touches on his squad. A massive overhaul of the goalkeeping department has been on the cards ever since Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow departed as free agents, and with Lucas Perri closing in on a loan move to Torino with an option to buy, the Whites have prioritized securing reliable, seasoned cover.
That search has led them squarely to Zetterer. Leeds have successfully negotiated a fee of around 5.1 million pounds (6 million euros / 7 million dollars) with the German club, and the player has been cleared to fly in for a medical at Elland Road.
However, the 31-year-old’s potential arrival hinges entirely on two final hurdles: passing his medical examinations and giving the definitive green light regarding his role within the squad.
Zetterer’s landscape at Eintracht Frankfurt shifted dramatically earlier in the window after the Bundesliga side secured Noah Atubolu on loan from SC Freiburg with an obligation to buy. The younger shot-stopper has been installed as Frankfurt’s clear first-choice option moving forward, severely restricting Zetterer’s path to regular minutes. Last season, the former Werder Bremen man made 28 appearances across all competitions—including five high-profile outings in the Champions League—proving he possesses the elite pedigree and composure Farke demands.
Initially, Zetterer’s representatives dismissed speculation of an exit, indicating that the player and his family were firmly settled in Germany and prepared to fight for the number-one jersey. However, once Frankfurt made it clear they were open to a sale, negotiations accelerated quickly, resulting in an agreed framework for his transfer.
Farke has been completely transparent with the veteran keeper regarding his expectations. Should Zetterer finalize the move, he will arrive as a high-level competitor and a primary deputy to club-record signing James Trafford, who arrived from Manchester City earlier this summer. In addition to pushing Trafford for the starting spot in the Premier League, Zetterer would be handed regular minutes during domestic cup fixtures.
While confidence is high inside Elland Road that the deal will get over the line, Leeds are maintaining a cautious approach. The club has lined up alternative veteran targets to ensure they are not left vulnerable should Zetterer opt against a supporting role at the eleventh hour.
Securing a reliable backup goalkeeper is only part of Farke’s remaining agenda. With Joel Piroe and Joe Gelhardt having departed the club, the Whites are also exploring the market for a new center-forward. Rumors suggest an intriguing striking option could be available for around 8.6 million pounds, though Leeds will need to act with extreme urgency as a rival Champions League club from France prepares to enter the fray.
As the transfer window enters its frantic final days, landing Zetterer would represent another astute piece of business by the Yorkshire club as they gear up for a demanding and competitive Premier League campaign.
