The Toronto Raptors are entering a fascinating new chapter, but there is one uncomfortable reality hanging over their championship ambitions: the clock may already be ticking.

After finally returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2022, Toronto has given its supporters genuine reason to believe that another deep postseason run could be possible. The Raptors are no longer simply building for the future. They are trying to turn a promising young core into a legitimate contender.

And that is where Kawhi Leonard enters the picture.

Toronto is reportedly preparing for a second stint with the superstar who delivered the franchise its only NBA championship in 2019. Leonard, now 35, is still waiting for the outcome of the league’s investigation involving the Los Angeles Clippers and alleged salary-cap circumvention, but a move back to Toronto is expected to happen.

If the deal eventually becomes official, Leonard is also expected to agree to an extension with the Raptors.

That could have enormous consequences for Toronto’s title hopes.

Scottie Barnes is the real centerpiece

As exciting as a Leonard return would be, the Raptors cannot afford to make the veteran forward the foundation of their long-term plans.

That responsibility belongs to Scottie Barnes.

At just 25 years old, Barnes has already established himself as one of the most important young players in the Eastern Conference. He has earned two All-Star selections during his first five NBA seasons and possesses the type of two-way ability that can potentially make him the centerpiece of a championship team.

His defensive potential is particularly intriguing.

Barnes has the physical tools and versatility to become one of the league’s elite defenders, and that could eventually become one of Toronto’s biggest advantages. Championship teams need stars who can influence games on both ends of the floor, and Barnes has already shown signs that he can develop into precisely that type of player.

The timing also works in Toronto’s favor.

Barnes remains under contract through the 2029-30 season, giving the Raptors several years to build around him. If the franchise can eventually secure him for even longer, it would give Toronto a much clearer foundation for sustained contention.

But Leonard changes the timeline.

The Kawhi factor could create pressure

Leonard’s arrival would immediately raise Toronto’s ceiling, but it would also create a sense of urgency.

At 35, Leonard simply cannot be expected to have an unlimited number of elite seasons remaining.

Even if he remains extremely productive, Toronto may realistically have only a few seasons in which Leonard can operate at something close to his best level. That means the Raptors cannot afford to waste time figuring out how their new-look roster fits together.

The challenge will be finding the right balance between Barnes and Leonard.

Ideally, Barnes becomes the team’s unquestioned No. 1 option while Leonard operates as the high-level second star who provides experience, scoring, defense and postseason toughness.

That combination could be extremely dangerous.

Leonard does not necessarily need to be the player carrying Toronto every night. In fact, the Raptors could be better positioned if Barnes takes control of the franchise while Leonard becomes the veteran superstar supporting him.

Toronto cannot afford to get this wrong

The proposed Leonard move represents a major opportunity, but it also comes with considerable expectations.

Toronto has spent much of the offseason positioning itself for this moment. Once Leonard arrives, the organization will effectively begin measuring its championship window.

If the Raptors can immediately build chemistry, remain healthy and surround Barnes and Leonard with the right supporting cast, there is every reason to believe they could become a serious threat in the Eastern Conference.

But if the experiment struggles, the consequences could be significant.

Leonard’s age means Toronto does not have the luxury of waiting several years for everything to come together.

Ultimately, however, the biggest question has little to do with Leonard.

It is about Barnes.

If Barnes takes another major leap and develops into the superstar capable of leading a championship-caliber team, Leonard could become the perfect veteran partner alongside him.

If that happens, Toronto’s championship window could remain open for years.

But if Barnes fails to make that jump, Leonard’s arrival may only provide a short-term boost rather than the foundation for another championship era.

For now, Raptors fans have every reason to be excited.

The franchise has its young centerpiece, a potential championship-winning veteran on the way and a chance to compete at the highest level again.

But there is no escaping the reality: Toronto’s opportunity may be closer to now-or-never than many realize.
