The long-running Kawhi Leonard saga has finally reached its conclusion.

After months of uncertainty, negotiations and an NBA investigation that temporarily placed the blockbuster deal on hold, Leonard is officially set to return to the Toronto Raptors in one of the most remarkable trades of the 2026 offseason.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Los Angeles Clippers and Raptors have agreed to move forward with the transaction, with the formal trade call now scheduled to complete the deal.

The move brings Leonard back to the franchise where he produced one of the greatest individual postseason runs in Raptors history and delivered the organisation its first NBA championship in 2019.

But Toronto has paid an enormous price to make the reunion happen.

Raptors give up huge package to bring Leonard back

The Raptors are sending the Clippers a package headlined by Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick, along with a significant collection of future draft capital.

Toronto’s outgoing package consists of:

• Brandon Ingram
• Gradey Dick
• Two unprotected first-round picks
• One first-round pick swap
• Two second-round selections

The two unprotected first-rounders are scheduled for 2031 and 2033, while the pick swap comes in 2027. Toronto is also sending second-round selections in 2030 and 2033.

It is a massive investment for a player who has already written his name into Raptors history.

Leonard’s return, however, is about far more than nostalgia.

Toronto believes the 35-year-old can immediately transform its ceiling and give Scottie Barnes the kind of established superstar alongside whom the franchise can seriously compete.

Leonard remains one of the NBA’s most dangerous two-way players when healthy, and his latest season in Los Angeles offered another reminder of just how productive he can still be.

During the 2025-26 campaign, Leonard averaged an impressive 27.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

Those numbers explain why Toronto was willing to surrender such a substantial collection of assets.

There is an obvious emotional element to the deal.

Leonard’s only season in Toronto ended with the Raptors winning the 2019 NBA championship, with the forward claiming Finals MVP honours after producing a historic postseason.

The Raptors are hoping the reunion can produce another championship push, this time with Barnes becoming the foundation of the roster and Leonard providing veteran leadership and elite two-way production.

It is an enormous gamble, but Toronto clearly believes the opportunity is too good to ignore.

Clippers receive crucial assets after NBA punishment

For Los Angeles, the timing of the trade is equally significant.

The Clippers recently received a major punishment from the NBA after the league concluded its investigation into alleged salary-cap circumvention involving the organisation and Leonard.

Los Angeles was stripped of five future first-round picks spanning 2029 through 2033 and handed a $30 million fine. Leonard was separately fined $700,000 but avoided a suspension.

That punishment made acquiring future draft assets particularly important for the Clippers.

The Toronto package therefore becomes considerably more valuable.

Los Angeles not only receives Ingram and Dick, but also replenishes its long-term draft cupboard with multiple selections and a valuable future pick swap.

The Clippers are effectively moving on from Leonard while adding players and assets that can help reshape the franchise.

A blockbuster that refused to go away

What makes the situation even more remarkable is how long the trade has taken to reach this point.

The agreement was initially reached in June, but the NBA investigation prevented the transaction from being immediately completed.

That created months of uncertainty surrounding Leonard’s future and left both franchises waiting for the league’s decision.

Now, that uncertainty is finally disappearing.

The trade call will formalise the move, bringing an end to one of the strangest sagas of the offseason.

For Raptors supporters, the message is simple: Kawhi Leonard is coming home.

Toronto has sacrificed a huge amount of future capital to make it happen, but the organisation clearly believes adding a proven championship superstar is worth the risk.
