Winger Wilfried Gnonto secured a deadline-day loan move to Serie A side Fiorentina, bringing a sudden end—at least temporarily—to his time at Elland Road.
Seeking a Fresh Start in Italy
Gnonto was initially expected to remain part of the setup in West Yorkshire before Fiorentina launched a late push just days before the transfer window slammed shut. Leeds agreed to let the Italian international make the switch, provided they could secure an adequate replacement before the deadline. “I really hoped it would go through, as I needed something different, seeing as last season was not very positive,” Gnonto revealed via Tuttomercatoweb. “I also think for international duty, playing in Italy was the best solution.”
Reflecting on his time with the Whites, the young forward acknowledged the unique bond shared within the squad and the passionate fanbase.
“That Leeds squad was young, but that was the secret, as we were all starting out together on this adventure,” Gnonto added. “Another decisive factor was the fans, as in Leeds everyone supports United, just as in Florence everyone supports Fiorentina.”

With Gnonto having fallen out of favor under Farke and facing limited minutes for the current season, sanctioning the temporary move proved to be the right step for all parties involved. It grants the winger a golden opportunity to earn a permanent stay in Italy, while giving Leeds a chance to secure a substantial fee if Fiorentina triggers a permanent transfer down the line.
Swapping Gnonto for the dynamic Jean-Matteo Bahoya represents a calculated gamble by the 49ers leadership group. However, given Bahoya’s immense raw potential and reputation as an exciting emerging talent, the transition could pay massive dividends for Leeds United as they continue to solidify their standing in the top flight.
