Ipswich Town manager Gary O’Neil has provided a reassuring squad fitness update as the Tractor Boys prepare to hit the road for tomorrow’s high-stakes Premier League fixture against Everton at Goodison Park.
Following a mixed week that featured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace followed by a disappointing 4-2 Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Arsenal, O’Neil’s side is eager to bounce back in top-flight action. With key players managing minor physical issues and long-term absentees nearing their returns, squad management will be critical as Ipswich looks to solidify its position in the division.
Emerson Cleared to Lead the Line on Merseyside
The biggest relief for Ipswich supporters centers around club-record signing Emerson, who sparked injury fears after coming off during last weekend’s win at Selhurst Park due to a tight thigh. However, O’Neil confirmed that the Brazilian striker has fully recovered and is ready to feature against the Toffees.
Emerson has enjoyed a bright start to the campaign, already chipping in with two goals and an assist. Explaining the decision to rest him during the midweek cup tie, O’Neil noted that missing the Arsenal match proved beneficial for his recovery.
“All good. Emi will be fine. It’s been another good week for him. He’s settled down well from the little tight quad that he had. Missing the game in the week helped him. He’s available,” O’Neil stated.
While the talented forward still displays flashes of raw potential, having him fit and available to lead the attack provides a massive boost for the visitors as they tackle a formidable Everton backline.
Matusiwa Nears Return While Taylor Targets International Break
Midfielder Azor Matusiwa also featured in the fitness updates. The Dutchman underwent major quad surgery back in May after bravely playing through intense pain during the closing stages of Ipswich’s successful Championship promotion campaign. Although he is back in full training and participated in 11v11 sessions on the grass, he was omitted from the squad for the midweek cup clash.
O’Neil explained that the club is deliberately taking a cautious approach with the midfielder to ensure he reaches peak physical readiness.
“We’re just waiting for him to get enough reps in training to feel comfortable, I guess. He’s doing 11v11 with the guys on the grass, but he has been out quite a while. We don’t need to throw him back in because we have lots of midfielders. It’s about trying to find the right moment for him and the team.”
O’Neil added that while Matusiwa is technically available for selection against Everton, a final decision on whether he will feature has not yet been made. Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Jack Taylor—who also underwent knee surgery in May—is nearing a complete recovery, with O’Neil highlighting the upcoming international break as the ideal window to get valuable high-intensity work into his legs.
Potential Changes to the Starting XI
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s tactical battle at Goodison Park, O’Neil hinted that supporters could see some fresh faces in the starting lineup. Buoyed by strong performances from substitutes in recent league fixtures and impressive individual displays in the cup, the Ipswich boss emphasized that his team selection remains fluid.
With a competitive squad eager to prove themselves on the Premier League stage, O’Neil and his players are fully focused on securing a statement result before heading into the international break.
