Following the official blockbuster trade bringing Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto, the Raptors have taken a massive stride toward building a legitimate contender around cornerstone star Scottie Barnes. Yet, if you ask fans and analysts which position requires the most urgent attention, the consensus points squarely at the center spot.
When healthy, Jakob Poeltl provides reliable size, solid rebounding, and expert screening. The glaring issue, however, is his alarming lack of availability. Poeltl appeared in just 46 games last season, following campaigns of 50 and 57 appearances, leaving his durability as a major concern.
Unfortunately for the front office, upgrading the center position is far easier said than done.
The League-Wide Center Shortage
The Raptors are currently caught in a tight financial crunch, largely complicated by Poeltl’s existing extension, which has proven difficult to move on the trade market. But Poeltl’s contract is only one piece of a much larger puzzle.

- Small-Ball and Depth Solutions: If Poeltl continues to battle injuries or struggles on the floor, Toronto’s fallback plan will likely involve managing his minutes carefully. Head coach Darko Rajakovic could lean into undersized, athletic lineups by deploying Collin Murray-Boyles at the five in favorable matchups, alongside contributions from Nate Bittle, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Trey Jemison III, and occasional small-ball minutes from Kyle Anderson.
- The Trade Deadline Pivot: Should those internal options fall short, the front office may ultimately have to bite the bullet. Moving Poeltl’s salary by attaching valuable draft assets ahead of the trade deadline could be the only route to securing a true difference-maker.
Quinn even floated a blockbuster hypothetical involving Anthony Davis landing in Toronto in exchange for Poeltl, RJ Barrett, salary matching pieces, and draft picks—though acknowledging the steep financial hurdles that would push the Raptors into the first apron.
