The NBA’s latest player rankings have already sparked plenty of discussion, but one Toronto Raptors youngster has emerged as a particularly intriguing name to watch ahead of next year’s countdown.

Collin Murray-Boyles did not make ESPN’s current NBA Rank top 100 for the 2026-27 season, yet his omission may not last long.

The 21-year-old Raptors forward is among a group of young players and established veterans identified as potential candidates to break into the league’s top 100 when the rankings return in 2027.

ESPN has already revealed players ranked from No. 100 through No. 51, with the remainder of the list still to come. Attention has now shifted toward the players who narrowly missed out and could force their way into the conversation over the next 12 months.

Murray-Boyles is one of the most interesting names on that list.

After arriving in Toronto, the South Carolina product immediately made an impression through his defensive activity, physicality and relentless energy. Rather than needing a lengthy adjustment period, he quickly demonstrated why the Raptors believe he can become an important part of their long-term plans.

His defensive versatility is particularly valuable.

Murray-Boyles can defend opposing players on the perimeter while also stepping inside and handling minutes at center when Toronto opts for a smaller, more flexible lineup. That ability to switch between positions gives him a role that extends beyond traditional positional boundaries.

His rookie campaign also produced encouraging statistical evidence.

Murray-Boyles ranked fifth among players in his draft class in win shares, an indication of how much impact he was able to make across different areas of the game. He then carried that form into Toronto’s first-round playoff matchup against Cleveland, producing an impressive all-around performance on the postseason stage.

That experience could prove particularly important heading into his second season.

Toronto has been building an identity around defense, and Murray-Boyles appears to fit naturally into that philosophy. The Raptors finished fifth in defensive efficiency last season, establishing themselves as one of the league’s stronger defensive teams.

The arrival of Kawhi Leonard adds another major defensive presence to a frontcourt that already features Scottie Barnes, giving Toronto an imposing collection of versatile defenders.

That environment could provide Murray-Boyles with an ideal platform to take another step forward.

Murray-Boyles has plenty of room to rise

The most important factor may simply be his age.

At only 21, Murray-Boyles still has considerable room to develop his offensive game while refining the defensive qualities that already stand out.

A stronger sophomore season could dramatically change the perception surrounding him.

He does not need to transform into a franchise scorer to become a more prominent name. Continued improvement as a defender, rebounder, passer and versatile interior player could be enough to push him into the NBA’s wider group of highly regarded players.

And Toronto will have plenty of incentive to give him opportunities.

The Raptors are entering a period where their young core is expected to take another step, while their defensive identity gives players such as Murray-Boyles a clearly defined role.

The 2027 ranking could look very different

Murray-Boyles is not the only player hoping to make the jump.

San Antonio’s Carter Bryant, Portland’s Toumani Camara, Atlanta’s Dyson Daniels and Onyeka Okongwu, Memphis’ Ty Jerome, Denver’s Cameron Johnson, Golden State’s Brandin Podziemski, Boston’s Neemias Queta and Washington’s Alex Sarr are also among the players identified as potential future NBA Rank newcomers.

Each has a different path toward breaking into the top 100.

For Murray-Boyles, however, the ingredients are already visible.

His defensive instincts, versatility and early impact have given him a strong foundation, while his fit within Toronto’s evolving identity could provide him with the opportunity to become an even more influential player.

There is obviously no guarantee that he will appear in next year’s rankings. The NBA’s landscape can change dramatically over a single season, and development rarely follows a straight line.

But if Murray-Boyles builds on what he showed during his rookie campaign, the conversation around him could look very different by this time next year.

For now, he remains outside the NBA’s top 100.

The bigger question is whether that will still be the case when the rankings return in 2027.
