Leeds United midfielder Ilia Gruev finds himself at a critical crossroads in his career. With his current contract set to expire on June 30, 2027, the Bulgarian international is gearing up for a massive push to reclaim his place in Daniel Farke’s first-team plans and secure a long-term future in Yorkshire.
The Road Back from Injury
Gruev’s journey over the past several months has been defined by frustration and resilience. Crucially, he recently logged a full 90 minutes for Bulgaria against Luxembourg, with upcoming international fixtures against Estonia, Iceland, and a rematch with Luxembourg providing the vital match sharpness he needs to force his way back into domestic contention.
Contract Uncertainty and the January Deadline
Despite positive relations between the player and the club, formal discussions regarding a contract extension have yet to gather meaningful momentum.
Leeds are understood to be closely monitoring Gruev’s performances over the coming weeks before deciding whether to open formal talks. With his deal winding down, foreign clubs will be legally permitted to discuss pre-contract options with Gruev starting January 1.
Even so, Leeds remain relaxed about the situation. Gruev has repeatedly expressed his contentment at Elland Road, praising the club’s progressive direction and stating his desire to help the team grow. Sources indicate he is eager to stay, but a lot will depend on how quickly he can re-establish himself under Farke.
