“It’s Going to Get Better”: Issa Diop Drops Bold Defense Claim Ahead of Ipswich Town’s Man City Test

Ipswich Town center-back Issa Diop believes his burgeoning central-defensive partnership with club captain Dara O’Shea is rapidly developing into a Premier League powerhouse, issuing a confident warning to top-flight attackers as the Blues prepare for a daunting clash against Manchester City.

The 27-year-old French-born defender—who arrived at Portman Road in an £8.5 million summer deal from Fulham boasting 173 games of top-flight experience—has quickly established himself as an irreplaceable pillar in Gary O’Neil’s defensive setup.

Having started all six Premier League fixtures at right-sided center-back, Diop initially paired with Jacob Greaves before shifting alongside O’Shea for the past two matches. Despite their limited minutes together, Diop insists the partnership is only scratching the surface of its potential.

Diop on O’Shea Tandem: “It’s Easy to Play With Him”

Speaking on his growing chemistry with O’Shea at the heart of Ipswich’s backline, Diop praised the Irishman’s leadership and tactical adaptability, stressing that their communication improves with every training session.

“It’s easy to play with him because he’s a very good player,” Diop revealed. “It’s still the beginning, we haven’t played a lot together, but after every session, every game, we know each other better. It’s just going to be better and better, I hope.”

With O’Shea transitioning from right-back to his preferred central role, both defenders have demonstrated exceptional fluidity regarding left-side or right-side placement. For Diop, tactical discipline outweighs personal preference:

“I just do what the gaffer tells me to do,” Diop added. “If he wants me to play on the left, I’ll play on the left. If he wants me to play on the right, I’ll play on the right. For me, it’s the same. It’s not really about playing on the left or on the right. It’s more about how the gaffer wants you to animate.”

Gary O’Neil Hails “Great Addition” as Blues Prepare for Etihad Challenge

Ipswich Town manager Gary O’Neil has been quick to praise Diop’s impact, pointing to his calm presence and Premier League pedigree as key factors behind the club’s impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign.

Sitting 10th in the table with nine points (W3 L3) following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Fulham, the newly promoted Blues have defied early relegation predictions.

“The group hasn’t been together long and we’re still working on those relationships,” O’Neil noted ahead of last weekend’s win. “But whether it’s been Greavesy and Issa or Dara and Issa, there are very promising signs there that it can develop into real good partnerships.”

“Issa has been a great addition for us as a newly promoted club. To be able to add someone of his stature and his Premier League experience was an excellent one for us to be able to get done.”

The ultimate test awaits O’Neil’s side on Saturday as they travel to the Etihad Stadium to face league leaders Manchester City.

With City’s attack firing on all cylinders, Diop and O’Shea’s ability to anchor the penalty box will be crucial if Ipswich are to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the Premier League season.
