An Ipswich Town supporter has launched a furious campaign for answers against football authorities after a terrifying stadium fall at Portman Road left his partner with severe injuries and fearing for her life.
The horrific incident occurred during Maidstone United’s shock 2-1 FA Cup victory over Ipswich Town in January 2024, when away supporter John Ryan, 62, toppled over the edge of the upper tier in the Cobbold Stand, sliding down a sloping executive box roof before crashing directly onto home fans seated below.
Following a dramatic trial at Ipswich Crown Court this week, Ryan was found not guilty of assault by beating and not guilty of causing actual bodily harm, after convincing a jury that he lost his footing or was pushed during goal celebrations. However, victim Aaron Rose, 49, insists the blame lies squarely with stadium safety infrastructure and matchday marshaling.
”I Thought I Could Have Died”: The Devastating Human Toll
Aaron Rose and his partner, Joanne Peters, were sitting in their lower-tier seats when the 6-foot away supporter crashed down on top of them from the upper deck.
While Rose suffered a severe blow to the back of the head, Peters sustained catastrophic aggravation to an existing spinal condition, scoliosis. In emotional court testimony, a tearful Peters recounted the terrifying moment she believed the entire executive seating box behind her had collapsed:
“When you’ve got a 6ft guy fall on top of you… it’s not the easiest thing to digest. My partner was badly affected… she thought she could have died.”
Adding insult to injury, Rose revealed that Peters has been subjected to relentless online abuse from rival supporters throughout the two-and-a-half-year legal ordeal.
Safety Oversight Exposed: Glass Barriers Added ONLY After Near-Fatal Drop
During court proceedings, it was publicly revealed for the first time that the upper tier of Portman Road’s Cobbold Stand featured zero physical safety barriers or glass screens at the time of the incident to prevent fans from tumbling over the edge.
It was only in the immediate aftermath of Ryan’s near-fatal fall that Ipswich Town executives hastily installed glass screens at the bottom of the upper tier—a measure Rose argues should have been implemented decades ago.
“There’s many things that have gone through my head in the two-and-a-half years, and I want answers. It was an accident waiting to happen… The barrier that’s now there—that my partner asked for—it should have been there many years ago, not just in the last couple of years.”
Demanding Football Association Accountability
Speaking outside court following the verdict, John Ryan expressed remorse for the incident, stating: “I’m sorry, it was an accident. I’m sorry it happened, what more can I say?”
However, Rose plans to formally challenge the Football Association (FA) and Ipswich Town officials over matchday security protocols and crowd management during high-intensity Cup ties.
Under official FA regulations, ultimate responsibility for match safety and venue security rests with the home club. As Ipswich Town evaluates their stadium procedures, Rose is determined to ensure no other supporter suffers a similar nightmare at a UK football ground.
