Newcastle United have made an early move in the transfer market by agreeing a deal to sign highly-rated Ecuadorian winger Johan Martinez from Independiente del Valle.
The 16-year-old prospect will officially join the club in the summer of 2027, once he turns 18. Until then, he will remain in Ecuador to continue his development with Independiente del Valle, one of South America’s most respected talent factories.
Long-Term Planning at St James’ Park
The agreement highlights Newcastle’s growing focus on building for the future through strategic youth recruitment. While Martinez won’t arrive immediately, the club has acted decisively to secure his signature ahead of strong competition from several top European sides.
This approach mirrors a recent deal for Georgian youngster Vakhtang Salia, who also had to wait until turning 18 before completing his move to Tyneside.
A Proven Development Path
Martinez comes through the ranks at Independiente del Valle, a club renowned for producing elite-level talent. The academy has already gained global recognition for developing players such as Moises Caicedo, who rose from the same system to become one of the most valuable midfielders in Europe.
The young winger has already shown his quality on the international stage as well. He is currently representing Ecuador at the South American Under-17 Championship and recently scored in a victory over Chile, helping his side reach the semi-finals.
At club level, Martinez was also part of the Independiente del Valle team that won the Ecuadorian Under-17 title in late 2025, further underlining his potential.
Newcastle’s Recruitment Strategy Taking Shape
Sporting director Ross Wilson expressed his satisfaction after completing the deal, emphasizing the importance of identifying elite young talent early.
He praised both the club’s scouting network and Martinez’s development environment, noting that Newcastle will continue to monitor his progress closely while he remains in Ecuador.
The move also reflects the club’s expanded scouting operations in South America, particularly following the appointment of a regional talent scout covering Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador.
