Nottingham Forest produced a devastating first-half masterclass at the Stadium of Light as they swept aside Sunderland 5-0, with head coach Vitor Pereira hailing a “Champions League level” display as his side moved closer to Premier League safety.
Forest tore through Sunderland in a ruthless opening 45 minutes that effectively settled the contest before half-time, extending their unbeaten league run to six matches and opening an eight-point cushion above the relegation zone.
Pereira said he had challenged his players to raise their standards to elite levels before kick-off — and they delivered emphatically.
“I asked my team to play at the level of Champions League because the Premier League is our Champions League,” he said. “To win at this stadium against Sunderland, who are 10 points above us, we needed our best level. In my opinion, the first half was full — tactically, mentally, pressing, creating problems, scoring goals, and not conceding.”
First-half blitz leaves Sunderland stunned
Any hope of a competitive contest was extinguished by a whirlwind spell of goals that left Sunderland shell-shocked.
Forest’s opener arrived in fortuitous fashion when Igor Jesus’ header deflected in off Trai Hume, but there was nothing lucky about what followed. Chris Wood capitalised on a costly goalkeeping error to double the lead, before Morgan Gibbs-White struck a superb third. Jesus added his second before the break as Sunderland’s defensive structure completely unravelled.
Elliot Anderson then added a fifth late on to complete a commanding and one-sided victory.
Pereira praises control and intensity
Pereira was particularly pleased with his team’s discipline, pressing intensity and defensive control, insisting the clean sheet was as important as the goals scored.
“In the end, it was about being compact, defending and finishing the game,” he said. “We scored, we didn’t concede, and that clean sheet is very important at this moment.”
Despite the emphatic result, the Forest boss warned against complacency, stressing that survival is not yet secured.
“It isn’t enough,” he added repeatedly. “We need more points. We cannot relax. We must keep our mentality.”
No interest in rivals as focus remains internal
With relegation rivals still in action over the weekend, Pereira admitted he would not be following results elsewhere, choosing instead to detach from the pressure of the table.
“I will not watch the games because I suffer with my games, that’s enough,” he said. “Maybe I’ll be at home, maybe drinking a pint, but not watching.”
Le Bris admits “painful punch” for Sunderland
For Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris, the defeat was a stark and sobering experience, with his side unable to match Forest’s intensity or execution.
“It hurts, it’s painful,” he said. “It was like a punch in the face for the players and for me as well.”
Le Bris admitted Sunderland’s response after the break fell short of expectations but insisted there was at least an attempt to restore pride.
“We just had to go forward and show energy, show pride,” he said. “Our fans were behind us. They were probably better than us today.”
