Speculation surrounding the future of Fabian Schär at Newcastle United has intensified in recent days, but manager Eddie Howe has made it clear that no final decision has been made regarding the veteran defender’s stay at St James’ Park.
Reports earlier this week suggested that Schär could leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires. At 34, and with the club reportedly looking to reduce the average age of the squad under sporting director Ross Wilson, the Swiss international appeared a likely candidate to move on.
However, Howe has pushed back on those assumptions, describing any claims about Schär’s exit as “premature” and reaffirming his importance to the team.
Howe highlights Schär’s unique qualities
Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s upcoming clash with Brighton & Hove Albion, Howe emphasized just how valuable Schär remains when fit. The defender’s absence for large parts of the season due to injury has coincided with inconsistent performances, something the manager believes is no coincidence.
Schär’s ability on the ball sets him apart from most defenders in the league. His composure in possession and range of passing allow Newcastle to break through opposition pressing systems—an area where the team has struggled in his absence.
Howe also pointed to Schär’s versatility and leadership, noting his ability to operate across multiple defensive roles and provide calmness in high-pressure situations. These attributes, combined with his experience, have made him a key figure since Howe’s arrival at the club.

This season has been challenging for Schär, with injuries limiting his involvement. At the same time, the emergence and strong form of Malick Thiaw has increased competition for places in central defense.
