Ipswich Town are wasting no time in beefing up their squad as they prepare for a fierce campaign back in the Premier League. Under the guidance of new head coach Gary O’Neil—who stepped into the dugout following Kieran McKenna’s shock departure from Portman Road—the Tractor Boys are actively scouring the market for top-flight experience. Their latest target? Burnley’s combative midfielder, Florentino Luis.
According to transfer insider Alan Nixon, Ipswich are currently “hanging about” in a competitive three-horse race to secure the 26-year-old enforcer’s signature before the summer transfer window slams shut.
The Relegation Exit Clause and Turf Moor Uncertainty
Florentino initially arrived at Turf Moor on loan from Portuguese giants Benfica during the 2025-26 campaign. While Burnley were obliged to make his transfer permanent for just over £20 million this summer after triggering a specific clause in his agreement, the Clarets’ disastrous top-flight campaign ended in relegation as they finished a lowly 19th.
Crucially, Florentino’s contract includes a relegation release stipulation stating that he is permitted to leave the club on a temporary loan deal after August 1 if Burnley find themselves competing in the Championship. Unwilling to spend a season playing second-tier football after gaining valuable top-flight experience across spells with Benfica, Monaco, Getafe, and Burnley, an immediate exit appears virtually guaranteed.
Highlighting the growing likelihood of a departure, manager Nicky Hayen notably omitted the midfielder from Burnley’s recent pre-season friendly against Ajax to protect him from any potential injuries that could jeopardize an impending transfer.
Fierce Premier League Competition
Ipswich will not have a clear path to the midfielder, however. The Tractor Boys find themselves locked in a tense battle alongside fellow suitors Fulham and Hull City, all of whom recognize the value of adding a battle-tested defensive shield to their ranks.
For Ipswich, securing a player of Florentino’s pedigree would provide vital stability in the middle of the park as O’Neil looks to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.
