Newcastle United are closing in on what could become one of their most important signings of the summer, with negotiations progressing rapidly for Benfica defender Amar Dedić as Matthias Jaissle continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

His reputation climbed even higher during this summer’s World Cup.

Starting every group-stage match for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dedić played a crucial role in helping his country reach the knockout stages before their impressive tournament ended against co-hosts the United States. His composure, athleticism and defensive consistency attracted attention from several clubs, but Newcastle have moved quickest to turn their admiration into concrete negotiations.

For Jaissle, signing Dedić would represent more than simply adding another defender.

It would be another statement of intent as Newcastle rebuild following several high-profile departures. Bringing in a player entering his prime years, already familiar with the manager’s methods and possessing experience across multiple European competitions would significantly strengthen the squad for the challenges ahead.
