Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has delivered a mixed bag of dramatic injury news on the eve of Villa Park’s high-stakes UEFA Champions League showdown against Turkish giants Fenerbahçe, confirming a serious month-long setback for full-back Matteo Ruggeri alongside the long-awaited return of a marquee summer signing.
Addressing the media ahead of Wednesday night’s European clash under the lights in B6, Emery revealed that summer acquisition Matteo Ruggeri is set for a significant spell on the sidelines. The Italian left-back was forced off at half-time during Saturday’s chaotic 2-2 Premier League draw with Brentford, leaving Aaron Wan-Bissaka to deputize out of position.
With fellow left-back Ian Maatsen also currently nursing an injury, Villa find themselves facing a temporary crisis in the defensive secondary.
“Ruggeri, I don’t know exactly how long it will be, but some weeks he will be out. More than one month,” Emery confirmed. “We must try to find solutions as Maatsen is not available. I think he should be in a few days, one week or two weeks joining us.”
Leon Goretzka In Line for Sensational Villa Debut
While Ruggeri’s prolonged absence complicates Emery’s defensive rotation, the Spaniard delivered a massive boost to Villa’s engine room by confirming that German international Leon Goretzka will finally be included in the matchday squad.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder, who arrived at Villa Park on a high-profile free transfer in August, has yet to make his competitive debut for the club after suffering a knee injury during his very first training session at Bodymoor Heath.
Having missed Villa’s thrilling 3-2 opening Champions League victory over Club Brugge in Belgium last month, Goretzka is fully fit and eager to provide veteran composure to a midfield under fire following recent domestic lapses.
Emery Issues Rallying Cry to Turn Villa Park Back Into a “Fortress”
Aston Villa’s European campaign offers a welcome opportunity to reset after a frustrating sequence of domestic draws. Despite making a perfect start in the Champions League league phase, Emery was brutally honest regarding the team’s lingering defensive inconsistencies and winless home form at B6 this season.
Emery stressed that intensive video analysis sessions and tactical drills have been underway at Bodymoor Heath to fix the structural breakdowns exposed during recent matches:
“We are realistic about how we are working and improving things. But it is not enough yet,” Emery stated. “At Villa Park, we have not won yet, so it is very important how we can improve things to be closer to winning.”
“Villa Park is for us something very, very special. It should be like the four years that we are here – how we achieved this as a special place, our fortress. Tomorrow is a new challenge to show it.”
With Fenerbahçe arriving in Birmingham followed by a home clash against Viking FK next week, Emery’s squad has a prime opportunity to consolidate their standing in Europe’s top eight—provided they can navigate their defensive injury crunch and integrate Goretzka’s elite pedigree into the fold.
