Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder expressed frustration with transfer business done just over a week after Celtic signed Auston Trusty from The Blades. The Scottish Champions sealed a £6m deal on deadline day, leaving Wilder feeling helpless as his team faced relegation to the Championship. He believes that the current transfer window system creates uncertainty and should be revised.
In an interview with Sports Boom, Wilder criticized the impact of deadline day transfers on a club’s ability to prepare for the upcoming season.
“Most of us in the game would prefer to see transfers completed before the season starts. The fact that they can still happen shows that the people responsible for setting up the windows don’t understand football. Football people don’t want this. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t prefer to have everything sorted out beforehand.
“There’s no need for it at all. Those setting things up this way either don’t care about our opinions, don’t understand or don’t want to listen, or have other motives. It’s nonsensical.”
“When the matches begin, transfers should be off the table. It’s that simple.
“The current system only creates uncertainty. I don’t think that’s fair to anyone involved. If it were up to me, I would change it immediately. I know many other managers and coaches who feel the same.
“Surely, it’s better for everyone, including the fans, to know that once the season starts, the team is set until at least January? With the current system, you could start strong and then lose key players after a few games. Everything changes.
“Players would rather focus on games without the distraction of uncertainty. There’s enough time to get things done over the summer. It’s fairer for everyone to be on the same page.”
Celtic pursued Trusty in the final weeks of the transfer window to strengthen their defense. The 26-year-old will aim to make an impact in Celtic’s UEFA Champions League campaign starting next week.
Wilder’s arguments make sense from a footballing perspective, but financial constraints and other factors must be considered when setting budgets and making transfers.
