Nottingham Forest’s survival bid and European dreams have been dealt a massive blow as winger Callum Hudson-Odoi confirmed he will not play again this season. The 25-year-old underwent successful surgery on Tuesday to repair a significant injury to his right quadriceps muscle.
The injury occurred during the closing stages of Forest’s historic Europa League quarter-final victory over Porto last week. Despite coming on as a half-time substitute, Hudson-Odoi was forced off in the 72nd minute, visibly distressed and unable to continue.
“No Pain No Gain”: Hudson-Odoi Speaks Out
From his hospital bed, Hudson-Odoi took to Instagram to share an emotional update with the Forest faithful. Posting images following his procedure, the winger remained defiant despite the timing of the setback.
”Surgery was successful but definitely not the way I wanted to end the season,” Hudson-Odoi shared. “With God’s timing and plan hopefully I’ll be back stronger and better than before. Let’s get this recovery started so I can get back out there doing what I love!! No Pain No Gain.”
The club confirmed that while the season is over for the winger, he is expected to return to full training during the pre-season period, providing a silver lining for the 2026/27 campaign.
A Critical Loss for Vitor Pereira
The timing could hardly be worse for Forest head coach Vitor Pereira. The Reds are currently fighting a two-front war as the 2025/26 season reaches its crescendo. First, they are locked in a Premier League survival race; following a crucial 4-1 win over Burnley, Forest sit five points clear of the drop zone with five matches remaining.
Secondly, the club is chasing European glory. Forest have advanced to a mouth-watering Europa League semi-final against Aston Villa, with the first leg scheduled for next Thursday at the City Ground. Missing a dynamic playmaker like Hudson-Odoi for these high-stakes fixtures leaves a significant void in the attacking rotation.
Further Injury Concerns: The Murillo Situation
Hudson-Odoi isn’t the only concern for Pereira. Defensive pillar Murillo was also substituted during the Porto clash and, despite starting against Burnley on Sunday, was forced off again before half-time.
While Pereira expressed cautious optimism, stating that Murillo “thinks it is not serious,” losing the Brazilian alongside Hudson-Odoi would leave the Forest squad desperately thin at the most pivotal moment of the season. With a trip to Sunderland on the horizon this Friday, Forest must now find a way to replace their key personnel as they look to secure their top-flight status and chase a European trophy.
