The San Antonio Spurs’ long-awaited return to playoff relevance has also brought an unexpected challenge—what to do with a suddenly expensive and crowded roster as financial realities begin to tighten.
After reaching the second round of the NBA Playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, the Spurs are now balancing immediate contention with long-term sustainability. And while their current success has energized the franchise, it may also force difficult decisions this offseason.
With rising salaries and a roster packed with young talent and veteran contributors, San Antonio is widely expected to explore roster adjustments this summer to maintain flexibility. That has sparked growing speculation around which player could become the most realistic trade candidate.
Among the names discussed internally and around the league, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, and De’Aaron Fox have all been mentioned in various trade scenarios. However, the situation is far from straightforward.
Johnson, in particular, has raised his stock significantly after a strong campaign, reportedly even contending for Sixth Man of the Year recognition. His expiring contract adds another layer of intrigue, as the Spurs must decide whether to extend him or capitalize on his current value.
Despite that, moving Johnson would be a difficult decision given his importance to the team’s identity and development over recent seasons.
Veteran forward Harrison Barnes is also a potential outgoing piece, but his status as an upcoming free agent makes him a less complex decision compared to long-term contract players.
The most surprising discussion, however, centres around Devin Vassell.
Vassell remains under contract for multiple seasons and is regarded as one of the team’s most reliable two-way players, offering strong perimeter shooting and defensive versatility. His deal, while once seen as heavy, now appears more reasonable in the evolving salary landscape.
Still, league sources and speculation suggest that his contract structure could make him a key salary piece in any major trade negotiations this summer, particularly if the Spurs pursue a blockbuster move.
That includes hypothetical scenarios involving high-profile stars, where matching salary becomes essential. In such cases, Vassell’s contract would be one of the most valuable tools San Antonio could include in a deal.
De’Aaron Fox, meanwhile, is considered far less likely to move despite some inconsistent stretches, with the Spurs still viewing him as a central part of their competitive core.
At this stage, there is no expectation of an immediate shake-up, with San Antonio more likely to add depth through the draft and free agency rather than make drastic changes.
However, in a league defined by flexibility and opportunity, the Spurs’ front office may soon face a difficult question: stay the course—or cash in on value while it’s at its peak.
