Newcastle United have officially completed the signing of highly-rated French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, and the 20-year-old has already sent a message that is getting fans talking across Tyneside.
The young shot-stopper has arrived from Stade de Reims in a deal worth around £18 million, putting pen to paper on a four-year contract after successfully completing his medical on Tyneside earlier this week.
Jaouen, who has been tracked by several European clubs due to his rapid rise in France, flew into Newcastle on Monday night before finalising the move on Tuesday — and he wasted no time expressing his excitement about the transfer.
Speaking for the first time as a Newcastle United player, the goalkeeper said he was instantly impressed by everything he experienced at the club.
“I’m really excited to become a Newcastle United player,” Jaouen said.
“When I visited the training ground, I could see how passionate everyone is about the club and the work they do. I loved the environment straight away. I also had the chance to see the stadium — it’s huge.”
The French youth international also admitted he had already been aware of Newcastle’s famous fanbase before arriving in England, and he is eager to experience it first-hand.
“I’ve heard so much about the supporters and how they are the best in the country,” he added. “The passion of the entire city and the atmosphere at St James’ Park are famous throughout football. I can’t wait to experience it and become a true Geordie.”
Jaouen also outlined the style of goalkeeper he aims to be at Newcastle, highlighting his modern approach to the role.
“As a goalkeeper, I enjoy one-on-one situations and playing as a modern keeper — building from the back and being comfortable with the ball at my feet,” he explained. “Now I want to develop alongside the players and staff here, enjoy my football, and prove my value on the pitch.”
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was equally delighted with the signing, praising the youngster’s potential and mentality.
“He is an exciting young goalkeeper who has shown real promise in France,” Howe said. “He has calmness and presence that belies his age, and he’s someone we feel can grow and improve within our environment.”
Sporting director Ross Wilson also revealed that the club had been tracking Jaouen for months before finally securing the deal.
“This is a signing we’ve worked hard on for a number of months,” Wilson said. “He has attracted interest across Europe, but what stood out was his ambition and determination to come here.”
Jaouen’s arrival is seen as part of Newcastle’s long-term strategy of building a squad full of young, high-potential talent while still competing at the top level.
The goalkeeper made 34 Ligue 2 appearances last season, keeping 15 clean sheets, and has also represented France at U21 level, further underlining his reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young goalkeepers.
He previously began his professional career at Guingamp, later gaining valuable experience on loan at Rodez and Dunkerque, where he impressed with his consistency and composure under pressure.
Now, the Frenchman steps into the Premier League spotlight — and Newcastle fans are already eager to see whether their new signing can develop into the club’s next long-term No.1.
