It has been nearly a full month since initial reports broke that the Toronto Raptors had agreed in principle to a blockbuster deal sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, future first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, second-rounders in 2030 and 2033, and a 2033 pick swap to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for their iconic 2019 championship hero, Kawhi Leonard. While the news sent shockwaves of excitement through the fanbase, the elation quickly faded as the transaction hit a massive roadblock.
To this day, Leonard is still not officially a Raptor. The trade remains frozen in limbo, placed on indefinite hold while the league investigates the Clippers regarding alleged salary-cap circumvention. For an impatient fan base eager to know if their squad can immediately contend at the top of the Eastern Conference or face another grueling playoff push, the prolonged waiting game has been nothing short of excruciating.
The Silver Lining: Turning Leverage into Draft Assets
However, a major silver lining has emerged from the delay. As CBS Sports expert Sam Quinn recently highlighted on the Third Apron Podcast, the stagnation of the trade coupled with the ongoing league probe places the Clippers in a heavily compromised negotiating position. This unique vulnerability gives Toronto a golden opportunity to squeeze extra value out of the deal.
“The fact that the trade has not been completed and the fact that the investigation might put the Clippers in sort of a compromised state, especially from a negotiating standpoint, means that I almost wonder if the Raptors are going to be able to squeeze a little bit more out of this trade,” Quinn explained.
For instance, if Leonard faces a potential multi-game suspension stemming from the investigation, could Toronto’s front office leverage that uncertainty to talk the Clippers out of parting with their 2027 pick swap? Or, if a heavier suspension looms, could one of those valuable future first-round picks be altered into something much more favorable for the Raptors? With the Clippers backed into a corner where walking away from the trade entirely is hardly an appealing option, Toronto holds all the cards.
Why Recovering Draft Capital Matters
Securing any draft assets back would be a monumental win for a Raptors squad that still possesses glaring depth questions at both the point guard and center positions. Reclaiming future picks or swaps provides the front office with the vital ammunition needed to pull off subsequent moves ahead of future trade deadlines.
Navigating a Potential Suspension
Naturally, trading for a superstar of Leonard’s caliber only for him to serve a sizable suspension to open the regular season is far from ideal. The first few months of an NBA campaign are critical for building chemistry, fine-tuning rotations, and establishing team identity. Missing Leonard for the first 25 games would certainly disrupt that developmental curve.
On the flip side, load management and missed games have historically been part of the package with Leonard. While a chunk of consecutive absences differs from planned rest days, an early layoff could ultimately help keep him fresh and healthy for the grueling stretch run and the postseason—when Toronto will need him most.
If the Raptors can successfully renegotiate and claw back some of their valuable draft capital while welcoming a generational talent back to town, a temporary suspension should not deter them from finalizing the deal.
