The 21-year-old winger delivered a stunning 24 hours — capping his first-team bow with a new contract through 2028
Tudor Mendel’s rise at Portman Road just hit fast-forward.
Less than a day after coming off the bench to help Ipswich Town thrash Leicester City 3-1 in the Carabao Cup, the young winger has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal — keeping him at the club until the summer of 2028, with an option for a further year.
From the Bench to the Big Time
Mendel’s competitive debut couldn’t have come at a better moment. Introduced in the 80th minute, he wasted no time joining the celebrations as Marcelino Nunez wrapped up the win with his second goal of the night — a moment now immortalized in the club’s matchday photos.
It’s the payoff for a journey that’s taken Mendel across two countries and through one of the most respected academy systems in world football.
A Football Journey Built for This Moment
Before Suffolk, there was Chelsea — where Mendel represented England at U15 and U17 level, marking him out as one to watch from an early age. In July 2023, he made the bold move to Anderlecht, gaining valuable senior experience with the Belgian giants’ reserve side, RSCA Futures, in the country’s second tier.
That experience proved the perfect stepping stone. Mendel arrived at Ipswich in September 2024 and quickly became a fixture for the U21s, earning the club’s prestigious Academy Player of the Year award last season.
This summer, the signs were already there. Mendel trained extensively with the first team throughout pre-season, featuring in friendlies against Wycombe Wanderers and Le Havre — clear evidence Gary O’Neil and his staff rated him ready for the step up.

Speaking after signing his new deal, Mendel didn’t hide his excitement:
“I am very happy to sign because I feel at home and settled at Ipswich. This means that I can keep on progressing within the support structure that we all get here as young players.
“It was a very proud moment to have made my competitive senior debut. I’m now focused on improving and repaying the faith that has been shown in me.”
He also took time to thank those who’ve guided him along the way:
“I want to thank the academy staff for their help in my development and making the transition as easy as possible and also the first-team staff and Gary O’Neil for giving me the opportunity.”

Academy manager Ben Chenery was equally thrilled to see Mendel commit his future to the club:

Injury Blow for Academy Teammate Boniface
Not all the news from Ipswich’s promising U21 crop is positive, however. Somto Boniface, Mendel’s teammate in the academy ranks, faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in just his second game while on loan at Leyton Orient. The winger is expected to be out for around two months.
