The Miami Heat may have already transformed their roster this summer, but there could still be one more intriguing addition on the horizon.

With Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo now expected to lead the franchise into a new era, Miami has assembled one of its most interesting rosters in years. The Heat have also added veteran championship experience by bringing Klay Thompson into the fold, giving head coach Erik Spoelstra another proven weapon on the perimeter.

Yet despite all those moves, Miami still has an open roster spot.

And according to one prediction, the Heat could use it on a former first-round pick whose NBA career has suddenly reached a fascinating crossroads.

Rather than pursuing another established veteran, Miami could reportedly consider taking a calculated gamble on Cam Whitmore — an explosive young scorer who has already experienced a dramatic change in fortunes since entering the league.

The idea would be simple: put Whitmore in an environment where he can play a defined role, learn from established stars and attempt to rebuild the value that once made him a highly regarded prospect.

That could make Miami an especially attractive destination.

The Heat had previously been linked with a potential reunion with former guard Gabe Vincent, but that possibility now appears to have cooled.

According to comments from NBA insider Jake Fischer, there remains interest in Vincent within the organisation, but Miami does not currently look like the likely destination for the guard.

Whitmore was selected 20th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft and entered the league with significant expectations.

Across three NBA seasons with the Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards, however, his production has not developed into the breakout many anticipated.

He has averaged 10.5 points while shooting 45 percent from the field and 35 percent from three-point range in 17.3 minutes per game.

Those numbers are hardly disastrous, especially considering his limited role, but they have not been enough to establish him as a long-term building block.

Things became even more complicated this summer.

Whitmore was involved in the trade that sent Peyton Watson to the Cleveland Cavaliers and was subsequently waived by Cleveland almost immediately.

Suddenly, a player who was once viewed as a promising first-round prospect found himself looking for another opportunity.

That is precisely why Miami could be such an intriguing landing spot.

The Heat would not necessarily need Whitmore to become a star overnight. Instead, they could ask him to concentrate on a specific role: attack closeouts, provide scoring off the bench, defend with intensity and make the most of his opportunities.

Playing alongside Giannis and Bam could also remove some of the pressure that comes with trying to carry an offence.

The presence of Antetokounmpo and Adebayo changes the equation.

Miami does not need another player who dominates the ball. What the Heat need is someone capable of generating offence when the stars sit, attacking mismatches and punishing opposing second units.

Whitmore has already demonstrated that he can score.

The question has always been whether he can turn that natural ability into efficient, controlled production.

A veteran-heavy environment could potentially help.

Giannis brings years of experience at the highest level, while Bam has developed into one of the NBA’s most versatile big men. Thompson, meanwhile, provides another championship-tested voice and elite shooting threat.

For a young player attempting to rescue his career, that combination could be invaluable.

There is also relatively little downside for Miami.

The Heat would not be betting their entire future on Whitmore. They would simply be giving a talented former first-rounder an opportunity to prove that his NBA story is far from finished.

A low-risk move with potentially huge upside

Whitmore was originally playing on a rookie contract worth around $15 million, but his current situation is obviously very different following his release.

That could work in Miami’s favour.

The Heat could potentially acquire a motivated player at a relatively modest cost, while Whitmore would receive perhaps his most important opportunity yet: a chance to rebuild his reputation inside a competitive team with championship ambitions.

If he succeeds, Miami could suddenly have another explosive scoring option without needing to spend heavily on the position.

If it does not work, the Heat can move on without having sacrificed significant assets.

That is what makes the prediction so interesting.

Miami has already won the offseason battle for Giannis. It has surrounded him with Bam Adebayo and added Klay Thompson. The roster is clearly built to compete.

But the final piece does not necessarily have to be another superstar.

It could be a player with something to prove.
