ASTON VILLA HIT WITH FRESH INJURY BLOW! Unai Emery Confirms Hamstring Problem as Defensive Concerns Grow Before Crucial Fixtures

Aston Villa have been handed another worrying injury setback, with Unai Emery confirming that Matteo Ruggeri suffered a hamstring problem during the club’s frustrating 2-2 draw against Brentford.

The Italian left-back was forced off at half-time, adding to Villa’s growing concerns in a position where options are already limited. With a demanding run of fixtures approaching, the timing of Ruggeri’s injury could hardly be worse for Emery and his coaching staff.

Villa were already without Ian Maatsen, who picked up an ankle injury during last month’s 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest. Ruggeri’s latest setback now leaves the club facing further uncertainty at left-back as they attempt to find consistency across multiple competitions.

Speaking after the Brentford draw, Emery confirmed the nature of Ruggeri’s problem but admitted that further examinations would be needed before the club could determine the full extent of the injury.

“Ruggeri is hamstring,” the Villa manager explained, adding that the medical staff would “have to check tomorrow.”

That leaves Villa supporters waiting for a clearer picture of the defender’s condition, including whether he will miss upcoming matches and how long he could potentially spend on the sidelines.

The situation is particularly concerning given the fixtures awaiting Emery’s side. Villa are preparing for a European meeting with Fenerbahce before turning their attention to Newcastle United. They will then face Viking and Manchester City the following week.

With matches coming thick and fast, losing another option in defence could create an additional selection headache for the Villa boss.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka replaced Ruggeri at half-time against Brentford, filling in on the left after the Italian was withdrawn. His ability to cover that position could prove useful if Ruggeri is unavailable, although Villa will be hoping the injury is not serious enough to keep their summer defensive plans disrupted for an extended period.

There was, however, a more encouraging update concerning teenager George Hemmings.

The youngster missed the Brentford match because of a minor knee problem, but Emery suggested that he should not be out for long. Hemmings could even be in contention for the upcoming encounter with Fenerbahce, depending on his recovery.

Nevertheless, Ruggeri’s injury will be the bigger concern for Villa supporters as the club look to turn their performances into better results.

Villa remain without a home victory this season, and Saturday’s draw against Brentford represented another missed opportunity to secure three valuable points.

After falling behind, Emery’s side fought back, with John McGinn completing the comeback in the 77th minute. However, the celebrations were short-lived as Kristoffer Ajer struck soon afterwards to restore parity for the visitors.

The result left Villa frustrated once again, particularly after they had shown signs of improvement compared with their previous home performance against Nottingham Forest.

Emery acknowledged that his team had made progress but admitted that the defensive issues remained a concern.

“To draw at home is not a good result,” he said.

The Villa manager believed his players had created opportunities and competed more effectively than they had against Forest. However, he was also disappointed by the number of chances Brentford managed to create.

“Maybe the result is fair,” Emery explained, while maintaining that there were positive signs in the team’s overall performance.

He also recognised that Villa could have taken all three points, but conceded that their opponents had enough opportunities to win the match themselves.

That assessment highlights the challenge facing Emery: Villa need to build on their improved attacking display while becoming more reliable defensively.

Now, the manager must also wait for an update on Ruggeri before deciding how to manage his defensive options during a crucial stretch of the campaign.

For Villa supporters, the biggest question is whether the left-back’s hamstring problem will prove to be a short-term issue or another significant absence at an inconvenient moment.

With Fenerbahce, Newcastle United, Viking and Manchester City all approaching, Emery will be desperate to avoid further disruption.

Villa’s injury situation could now become an important storyline in the weeks ahead. The club need results, defensive stability and players available for selection — and Ruggeri’s upcoming assessment could provide a vital indication of how much work Emery has to do to keep his squad competitive.
